What Does My Pet Really Need?

DOGS:
 
  At our full service hospitals (My Pet's Animal Hospital) in Knoxville and Alcoa, we see the following preventable diseases most commonly in dogs: Parvovirus, Intestinal Parasites (like roundworms and hookworms), Heartworm disease, Kennel Cough (bordetella) and Leptospirosis.  Based on this, you would want to do the DAPP vaccine, Leptospirosis, Rabies (to fulfill public health laws), put your pet on heartworm preventative (a heartworm test is recommended first but not required) and do either a fecal check for intestinal parasites or put your pet on a monthly heartworm preventative that also treats some intestinal parasites (like Heartgard or Interceptor).  If your dog has a lot of exposure to other dogs (dog parks, boarding kennels, grooming, etc) then add Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine as well.
 
CATS:
 
For cats, feline upper respiratory disease complex is the most common disease we see along with intestinal parasites. In addition, canine heartworm disease is showing up more and more in cats every year.  Based on this, you would want to vaccinate your cat with FVRC and Rabies (public health laws) as a minimum and then put your cat on a heartworm preventative (Feline Revolution is unparalleled in that it protects against heartworm disease, treats for roundworms and hookworms which are intestinal parasites, and protects against fleas and ear mites). If your cat has exposure to other cats, feline leukemia vaccation is highly recommended.
